Grow Younger Gives Wings To Elders’ Artistic Side On World Senior Citizens Day

Even as World Senior Citizens Day is to be observed on August 21, Mala Mansukhani and Grow Younger have made sure the celebrations go on all month long. The initiative, which aims at promoting a holistic life for seniors, is honoring veterans with a very special campaign called #YoungSeniors.
The idea behind this virtual campaign goes beyond making seniors understand the idea that their physical and mental well-being is still essential—this is a year round effort, believes Mala. But this month’s campaign is all about embracing the youth inside every senior citizen. There’s a child and a youngster that craves fun and enjoyment in the heart of all elders, and it’s time they shine through!

To that end, Mala and Grow Younger have also organized a unique, one-of-a-kind art workshop for handpicked seniors, where they unleashed the young-at-heart artist inside them! In association with Zima, and Bandra, the art workshop gave an opportunity to these seniors to free their spontaneous and fun side for a day, without worry!
The theme chosen for the event was Boho, the eclectic art form that mixes various colors, styles, and textures minus worrying about rules. It’s kind of perfect for these elders, who are shackled by the notion that grandparents ought to behave and be a certain way. The event was held after a hi-tea party that served as a mixer and ice breaker for these seniors to kindle new friendships.

And encouraging this cozy group of elders was none other than Geeta Kapur, aka Geeta Maa. Choreographer extraordinaire, Geeta Maa believes this is a cause close to her heart, in remembrance of her own late mother who she was extremely close. “It’ll be my pleasure to be a part of this special day and cheer on the seniors, who will find joy in art,” she said.
For Mala, herself in her 60s, World Senior Citizens Day is more than just a header on the calendar. She believes in helping people her age understand the idea that age is just a number. Not only does being an elder not define how you treat your mind, body, and soul, it also should not be an impediment to wanting to have hobbies and enjoy life. And this month, this very special group will be doing so with a brush in their hands, paint smeared on their fingers, and a smile on their faces!
